Our work
The Context
Despite significant economic growth, Peru faces profound inequalities, particularly in rural areas where poverty and food and nutritional insecurity persist. Nearly 40% of the rural population lives in poverty, twice as many as in urban areas. In addition, the alarming rate of anemia in children under the age of three has risen considerably in recent years, affecting almost 49% of children in rural areas. The Covid-19 crisis, which severely affected the country between 2020 and 2022, has exacerbated the problems of poverty.
Humundi’s work in Peru
Since the late 1990s, we have been supporting farming families in Peru to combat poverty and food and nutritional insecurity in rural areas.
Humundi (formerly SOS Faim) actively supports farmers’ organizations, local rural development NGOs and rural finance institutions. We strengthen their advocacy actions and their financial, advisory, processing and marketing services in favor of peasant agriculture, with a particular focus on the agro-ecological transition.
We are also supporting national platforms in their advocacy for family farming and the establishment of sustainable food systems.
