Find out how Humundi (formerly SOS Faim) is supporting family farming in the DRC to combat poverty and food insecurity in rural areas.
Our work in
The context
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world, with the greatest inequalities between men and women. However, the country has a wealth of natural resources, including soil, forests, natural gas and oil.
Although 65% of the population lives in rural areas and mainly practices family subsistence farming, national agricultural policy does not consider family farming to be a driving force for development, and it does not benefit from public or private investment. Instead of favoring the development of local agriculture, the state resorts to massive food imports.
Humundi’s work in DRc
Since the early 1980s, Humundi (formerly SOS Faim) has been supporting family farming in the DRC to combat poverty and food insecurity in rural areas.
- We work mainly with farmers’ organizations and their federations, as well as a local development NGO and a rural finance institution.
- The aim of our work is to develop an agroecology centre with a view to promoting good practice among market gardeners and offering alternatives to the toxic pesticides used on a massive scale in the province of Kinshasa.
- We support initiatives at national level as part of the AgriCongo Alliance and at provincial level in Kongo-Central and Kinshasa.
